Reporting to the CIO, the Director, Information Technology Services serves as a key member of the VIU Executive Leadership team responsible for the direction of the processes and technology services and systems required to meet the CIO's strategic and operational initiatives. The Director is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of all IT services to VIU staff and partners. This senior IT executive role develops and promotes technology standards across the institution and its partners in alignment with guidance from the Information Management team and institutional policies and goals.


    Determines staffing needs; recruits staff, provides work direction and training, establishes performance expectations, provides ongoing coaching and mentoring.

    Works with senior leadership from across the University to understand technology services and systems solutions that support the academic, learning, and administrative needs of the University and its partners.

    Provides leadership in the implementation of VIU's strategic priorities and initiatives and ensures IT Services priorities align with those of the University.

    Manage complex technology budget, totaling in the area of $10 million, for and from IT department unities and ensure they comply with strategic goals, guidelines, and objectives.

    Serves as a key member of the CIO's leadership team, helping to define organizational strategy, approving technology-related acquisitions, developing and optimizing processes, project approval, and change management.

    Drives development of the technology architecture standards, infrastructure and service portfolio roadmaps and solutions development.

    Responsible for developing, tracking, and analyzing key performance metrics to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of services and systems provided.

    Responsible for developing and managing relationships with customers, vendors, and partners.

Financial Responsibility

This job may impact organizational budgets through expenditures managed, revenues generated or both. The job is accountable and specifically responsible for these dollars. They may also be included in the supervisor's budget, but day to day responsibility to establish objectives and determine deployment of (human/financial) resources reflected by them, is at the sole discretion of this job.

Business, Social and Political Acumen

There is a need for the role to understand the reasons for restructuring organizational operations in response to marketplace changes as well as developing and providing supporting rationale for why change is necessary in a timely and effective manner. This role needs to understand the big picture to develop and maintain a long-range vision for the organization, recommending /implementing short and medium-term strategies that consistently move the organization towards that vision. The job needs to understand the views and interests of the communities in which the organization operates to position the organization within those communities positively.

Planning and Work Coordination

Plan/coordinate the design, review and delivery of a number of key products, programs and/or services critical to the division fulfilling its basic purpose

Functional or Process Oversight

    Maintain and grow ITIL standard across ITS

    Promote and adhere to appropriate ISO standards for data, infrastructure, and systems

    Adhere to and maintain legislated privacy standards across all technology stacks
