ASL Environmental Science Inc., based in Victoria, British Columbia, is a world class company with over 40 years of experience in oceanographic, acoustic, equipment leasingremote sensing and ice research products and scientific consulting services. Our products include the well-known, industry standard Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler (AZFP) deployed in hundreds of locations world-wide. We provide clients with consulting services including Flow Measurement, Numerical Modeling, Wave Measurement & Analysis, Sediment Transport, and Ice Studies.

ASL is seeking a full-time Software, Firmware and Hardware developer.  The Electrical Engineering position includes the design and development of production-ready firmware and PC control software for ASL’s acoustic instruments. It includes electrical engineering and design work on all aspects of sonar design under supervision of the project lead.

The ideal candidate for this role is passionate in our technology space, self-motivated, and is a collaborative problem solver with excellent communication skills able to work independently or as part of a team.

This position is based in Victoria, BC, Canada. Unfortunately, remote work is not available at this position.

Role Requirements:

  • Firm grasp of real-time operating systems concepts including processes, threads, and interrupt handling,
  • Experience with C debugging tools and hardware,
  • Experience with build systems and continuous integration environments,
  • Familiarity with development on ARM processors,
  • Familiarity with good software coding practices and design patterns.


Bachelor’s degree in applied sciences, degree in Electrical, Computer or Mechatronics Engineering, related discipline. Or equivalent work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Develop and maintain robust and scalable firmware for deployed and new embedded products.
  • Develop and maintain robust and scalable control PC software for deployed and new embedded products.
  • Assist in the development of hardware in support of ASL products.
  • Develop robust tests utilizing hardware and software tools to drive the highest level of quality in our products.
  • Collaborate with company-wide teams to ensure consistently high standards of implementation and innovation.
  • Assist in coordinating and planning the team’s objectives.
  • Triage and resolve customer issues
  • Ability to write concise and accurate technical instructions throughout program development.
  • Self-starter and highly motivated to make proactive changes, able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective deadline management and project management skills.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to explain technical concepts relevant to product performance to various non-technical stakeholders internally and externally.
