Infrastructure Administrator (Continuous) 

Information Technology Department 

The City of Victoria continues to modernize its IT environment by leveraging hyperscale cloud delivering efficient, effective, and secure technology to staff and the public. Reporting to the Supervisor, IT Infrastructure, the Infrastructure Administrator will be part of our infrastructure team responsible for installing, configuring, and maintaining both physical and virtual servers, hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI), on-premise and Azure cloud infrastructure, along with associated hardware and software components. 

As an IT Infrastructure Administrator, your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks related to the management and maintenance of the organization's technology infrastructure. 

Here are some key areas of responsibility you can expect: 

        Microsoft servers, Hyper-V, HCI, and system administration 


        Active Directory, Azure AD (Entra ID) and group policies 


        Application support and deployment 


        Azure IaaS and PaaS administration 


        SCCM and Intune experience 


        SolarWinds Orion 


        MS Team Administration 


In addition to these core responsibilities, you may also be involved in security management, disaster recovery planning, infrastructure capacity planning, and staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and industry best practices. Your role as an IT Infrastructure Administrator is crucial for maintaining a stable and efficient technology environment that supports the City’s overall operations.

POSITION FUNCTION 


Install, configure and administer servers, databases, applications, local and wide area networks, storage, security and associated systems and provide technical support and training. 



KEY DUTIES 


Install, configure, maintain, tune and administer servers, databases, applications, Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), local and wide area networks, network communications systems, system infrastructure hardware and software; evaluate user needs and determine application developments, hardware allocations and software requirements. 


Install and configure software, applications and databases and provide technical support; ensure uniformity of standards for software programs and applications, set-up and use; prepare reports and make recommendations regarding the development of local and wide area networks, servers applications, databases, backbone stored and recovery systems. Assist in thin-client delivery of applications to end users. Ensure the protection of City business critical systems and information and develop disaster recovery plans and processes to support the City’s business continuation. 

Provide technical support for the City’s webserver infrastructure sites including support of content management and web server management tools and interfaces between web front-ends and application database systems. 

Assess application and system training requirements; make recommendations on outside training resources; develop and present classroom training programs on the use of applications, databases and reporting systems. 

Respond to enquiries and complaints from staff regarding application and hardware related problems; liaise with other departments for IT strategic planning and represent the division on various city committees; provide advice and support implementation of in-house developed or purchased web-based and SQL based applications; provide technical information and analysis to staff, consultants and outside agencies; schedule and monitor the work of computer consultants; maintain records and files for the section. 

Perform related duties as and when required. 


INDEPENDENCE 

Work is generated by annual objectives and budget, requests for service and system requirements or is assigned by supervisor. 

Work is reviewed through reports to supervisor.
Issues such as major expenditures and policy are referred to supervisor with recommendations. 


WORKING CONDITIONS 

Physical Effort: 

Sit with arms unsupported while keyboarding. (often) Lift and move medium weight equipment. (rare) 

Mental Effort: 

Periods of intense concentration while developing and implementing IT systems and solutions (often) 

Meet multiple and conflicting priorities and deadlines. (frequent) 

Visual/Auditory Effort: 

Focus on a variety of technical source data, system configuration options, focus on computer. (often) 

Work Environment: 

Office and computer room. Computer room is relatively noisy and has a lot of electrical outlets, connections involved. 


KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

        Organize and prioritize work of the unit. 


        Understand and apply the principles of personal computer and network operating systems, servers, databases, networks and general infrastructure, hardware and software. 


        Understand and apply the principles of web site development and maintenance. 


        Working level knowledge of internet/intranet scripting languages and web graphic utilities. 


        Design, plan and implement local and wide area networks, application, server, databases, backup and recovery strategies, disaster recover and business continuation plans. 


        Design, plan and implement web based applications. 


        Prepare and present reports and training sessions. 


        Establish and maintain working relationships. 



QUALIFICATIONS


Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification: 


Diploma in Computer Science or Microcomputer Technology. (2 years) 

Microsoft or Netware Certified Engineer Certificate (Enterprise Level). (1 year) Required to sign attestation of confidentiality. 


Experience: 


5 years of related experience including 2-3 years experience in database support and implementation 


or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 



OTHER: 


May be requested to substitute in a more senior position. 



Work schedule: Monday - Friday, 35 hour work week 

$56.70 per hour, Pay Grade 18 (Under Review)
