Ocean Diagnostics is an environmental impact company located in Victoria, B.C., that is dedicated to diagnosing and protecting the health of our oceans. Driven by the desire to save our oceans and waterways from plastic pollution, we offer technologies designed specifically for microplastic research.
Our technologies and services empower scientists to produce data that will evoke a positive change in global plastic pollution. Reporting to the CTO, the Mechatronics Engineer will join our small, dynamic team to help develop new sensors, sampling instruments and analytical equipment for the marine research community. The position will require considerable collaboration with internal and external resources. The successful candidate will be experienced, enthusiastic and motivated about engineering and sustainability.
Responsibilities
Assist in 3D design (SolidWorks) of new product components, fixtures, test assemblies and subsystems with an emphasis on design for 3D printing and machining
Fabricate, test and refine mechanical components using rapid prototyping tools, such as 3D printing (FDM and SLA), laser cutting, CNC and common machining tools (mill, lathe, drill press, band saw, etc.)
Evaluate, integrate, and test embedded optical components and sensors such as Imaging devices (CCD, CMOS), spectrometers, and optical filters and objectives
Evaluate off-the-shelf and custom electronic components, PCBs, circuits and other electronic segments to meet our dynamic product development needs
Prototype electronic sub-systems using open-source prototyping tools (Arduino, ARM microcontrollers, Raspberry Pi, embedded Linux boards, etc.)
Assist in development of embedded system firmware (C/C++) and testing scripts for electronic system evaluation (Python)
Assist in lab experiments and field operations on the water around Victoria to validate new products, provide quality assurance and collect water quality data for internal use
Qualifications
Current resident and eligible to work in Canada
Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipline or highly relevant experience
2+ years of experience in a Mechatronics role
Proficient CAD user with an in-depth knowledge of SolidWorks
Required knowledge in standard word processing, spread sheet and database programs
Ability to readily learn new packages and solve common problems with software and computer systems
Experience in underwater sensors or underwater robotics an asset
Experience in spectroscopy or imaging sensors strongly preferred
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfortable working in a small company environment where both autonomy and working as part of a dynamic team are essential
Passionate about global environmental issues
