The UVic Online department within University Systems at the University of Victoria plays a pivotal role in implementing new enterprise-wide software systems, continuously improving existing systems, and providing University-wide data stewardship. We are a dynamic team which continues to implement exciting and powerful software systems, which have enabled UVic to become one of the most technologically advanced and well integrated universities in North America.

Under the direction of senior functional leaders in University Systems, Human Resources and Financial Services (HRIS), the Senior Business Analyst (SBA) is responsible for researching, planning, designing, troubleshooting, and implementing optimized functionality and business processes related to software systems that align with the administrative unit's service plan and the University's strategic objectives.

The Senior Business Analyst serves as a primary liaison between technical resources in University Systems and functional stakeholders at all levels  to translate business requirements into technical solutions, and to lead the implementation of projects and associated training to deliver improved solutions.

This position leads and coordinates the functional and technical resources required to troubleshoot and implement large information systems projects and upgrades to support their assigned client portfolio by working with resource managers and subject matter experts from across functional areas and University Systems.

The position also works with senior leadership within the client portfolio to make recommendations in the development of new business process policy, communicate and socialize changes to business processes and technology, and ensure compliance and user acceptance of new solutions.

This position will provide system modeling and analytical support to senior leaders in support of major change or restructuring initiatives, including collective bargaining processes.


The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range:  $68,846 - $86,058 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity. 
  • Performance range: starting salary to max of $98,966 is available through annual performance increases.


Job Summary

Mandate or core purpose of role

Summary of roles, functions and areas of focus

This position is responsible for working closely with stakeholders at all levels in client areas to optimize existing technologies and implement new technologies that support key university business processes. This may include the digitization of manual or paper-based processes, as well as substantial modifications to existing processes.

The Senior Business Analyst will work closely with functional and technical stakeholders at all levels on change management processes resulting from the implementation of new and changed systems and business processes throughout the planning and implementation phases of projects.

The Senior Business Analyst manages projects and initiatives that lead to the adoption of best practices for efficient business processes, the use of technology, and continuous improvement to support the university’s ability to effectively manage constrained resources.

This position ensures compliance of new systems and processes through the application of comprehensive quality assurance processes and the use of comprehensive, confidential, in-depth investigations as required.


Job Requirements

Qualifications and experience:

This position requires a relevant undergraduate degree and/or professional designation plus minimum 5 years of related experience, that includes:

  • Business analysis, optimization, and change management
  • Direct experience working in an administrative role within the given functional area
  • Project implementation and managing projects within a formal project management framework environment.
  • Leading and motivating project teams

 

Key job-specific competencies:

  • This position requires a strong background in business analysis and project management, with a demonstrated ability to translate complex business requirements into functional and technical solutions.
  • Effective relationship building, diplomacy and superior inter-personal and communication skills are key requirements.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, determine priorities, make decisions, and meet deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to be independent, objective, and apply strong professional judgement.
  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and willingness to champion innovation and new business processes; to influence others through use of technical expertise as it relates to making changes in existing processes or practices; and to use initiative to understand and be part of the decision making team that develops and assesses the effectiveness of current or improved business processes. 
  • Exceptional organization skills are required along with strong computer application skills, including work with databases and quantitative analysis necessary to support business processes.


Unusual working conditions:

The high pressure nature of the projects may require tight timelines.  Irregular and extended hours of work may be required to meet deadlines that are strategic to the university.  High risk may be associated with missed deadlines.
