In May 2022, Vance Street Capital acquired Carmanah Technologies, and along with Polara Enterprises (“Polara”), which Vance Street partnered with in December 2021, we have come together to form Vance Street’s traffic and pedestrian safety ITS platform.   This kickstarts a new and exciting phase for Carmanah that will propel greater opportunities and development of our critical safety products. 

With both Carmanah and Polara’s organic product development planned initiatives, we are looking to grow our combined product development teams to provide the best pedestrian safety and ITS solutions that will help achieve the goals of Vision Zero.  

Carmanah is looking for a Senior Firmware Developer to join our team!

About the role

This position will be based at Carmanah’s Victoria, B.C. office and will report directly to the Director of Engineering at Polara. The Senior Firmware Developer will develop and support industry-leading traffic products and help create products that allow the visually impaired to safely experience the world on their own terms.  The successful candidate will be highly competent in C language programming, firmware design best practices and up to date on technology trends. 

Responsibilities Include

  • Maintain and enhance embedded software for existing product lines.
  • Own the embedded software system design cycle from requirements through launch and beyond.
  • Design, develop, code, test, and debug embedded software.
  • Integrate, verify, and validate new product designs and design changes.
  • Perform design and code reviews.
  • Interface with a cross-functional engineering team.
  • Support the Tech Support team with intimate product knowledge.
  • Contribute to a fun and innovative work environment.

Minimum Experience

  • Degree in Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer Science or Computer Engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of computer architecture and embedded software development best practices, with significant experience in low-level development and programming.
  • Ability to read schematics to troubleshoot, debug and bring up new hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers and in-circuit emulators.
  • Mastery of C language programming as it pertains to an embedded environment.
  • Working knowledge of C++.
  • Knowledge of communication interfaces, such as SPI, I2C, I2S, UART, CAN, USB, BLE, Wi-Fi, and Ethernet.
  • Real-time development experience with and without an RTOS.
  • Experience programming peripheral hardware at the register level.
  • Familiarity with various ARM architectures (e.g., Cortex M4, M7, etc.).
  • Familiarity with security basics (e.g., TrustZone, security certificates, etc.).
  • Familiarity with OOP design principles.

  • Solid problem-solving skills.  Highly technical, quickly grasping how things work.
  • Presents technical concepts, ideas, and information in terms that both engineers and non-engineers can understand.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and collaboratively with a cross-functional team.

This position will work on-site at our Victoria office and be eligible for our hybrid remote work program.  Covid safety protocols remain in place and are diligently followed.
