ASL Environmental Science Inc., based in Victoria, British Columbia, is a world class company with over 40 years of experience in oceanographic, acoustic, equipment leasing, remote sensing and ice research products and scientific consulting services. Our products include the well-known, industry standard Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler (AZFP) deployed in hundreds of locations world-wide. We provide clients with consulting services including Flow Measurement, Numerical Modeling, Wave Measurement & Analysis, Sediment Transport, and Ice Studies.

ASL is seeking a full-time junior to intermediate Software development and IT person to design, code, test, and analyze software programs and applications. This includes researching, designing, documenting, and modifying software and firmware specifications throughout the production lifecycle. The software developer will also analyze and amend software errors in a timely and accurate fashion and provide status reports. The successful candidate will be required to become familiar with ASL’s IT infrastructure and provide user and system support.

The ideal candidate for this role is passionate in our technology space, self-motivated, and is a collaborative problem solver with excellent communication skills able to work independently or as part of a team.

This position is based in Victoria, BC, Canada. Unfortunately, remote work is not available at this position.

Role Requirements:

  • Technical knowledge of programming languages with a demonstrated proficiency in the ‘C’/C++ programming language.
  • Experience with MATLAB is an asset.
  • Hands on experience working in integrated development environments, including National Instruments CVI Development system is an asset.
  • Solid working knowledge of current Internet technologies, including ASP.NET, C#, T-SQL AJAX and familiarity with DBMS mythologies.
  • Experience working with enterprise applications, including MS SQL Server and IIS.
  • Experience with a wide variety of operating systems and client/server architectures.
  • Collaborate with company-wide teams to ensure consistently high standards of implementation and innovation.
  • Familiarity with the Oceanographic industry is an asset.


Bachelor’s degree in Software/ Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Diploma in Computer Systems Technology or equivalent work experience.

Ability to write concise and accurate technical instructions throughout program development.


Ability to troubleshoot programming changes, errors, and subsequent modifications; must be able to do this with the work of other programmers.


Able to interpret the operational requirements of end users, project managers, and other stakeholders.


Self-starter and highly motivated to make proactive changes, able to work independently or as part of a team.


Effective deadline management and project management skills.


Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and the ability to explain technical concepts relevant to product performance to various non-technical stakeholders internally and externally.
