Electrical Engineer / Senior Electronic Technologist (Term Position) Instrumentation & Real-Time Systems
ASL Environmental Sciences Inc. is an employee-owned company with over 45 years of experience designing, building, and deploying oceanographic and environmental instrumentation for government, industry, and academic clients worldwide.
We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer or Senior Electronic Technologist to join our Product Development and Consulting team for real-time oceanographic monitoring. This role focuses on the design, integration, testing, and support of real-time instruments, including systems incorporating serial communications, embedded electronics, and autonomous data loggers. You will work closely with mechanical engineers, scientists, production staff, and project managers in a collaborative, hands-on environment.

Key Responsibilities
Design, implement, and test electronic systems for real-time and autonomous instruments
Develop and support systems using serial communications (e.g., RS-232/485, UART, SPI, I²C) and data logging architectures
Perform system-level integration of electronics, firmware, sensors, and mechanical enclosures
Support testing, troubleshooting, and performance analysis of in-house and third-party instrumentation
Contribute to design reviews, quality assurance, and component selection, including management of obsolescence
Prepare cost estimates and technical input for new product concepts and proposals
Provide technical support to production staff and assist with documentation and knowledge transfer
Participate in occasional field work, testing, or deployments as required
Qualifications & Experience
Electrical Engineer or Senior Electronic Technologist
10–20 years of relevant experience in electronic instrumentation or embedded systems
Strong background in:
Analog and digital electronics design and testing
Embedded or real-time systems
Serial communications and data logging systems
Experience working with environmental or industrial instrumentation is a strong asset
Familiarity with mechanical packaging of electronics (environmental enclosures, pressure housings) is an asset
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams
Clear technical communication skills, both written and verbal

Location: 6703 Suite 1 Rajpur Place, Saanichton, BC
Start Date: As soon as available
Hours per Week: 37.5
Term Duration: 4 months with the option to extend
Work Environment: Office, lab, and occasional field settings
Physical Requirements: Some lifting; occasional exposure to industrial and field hazards
The successful candidate will be required to obtain Canadian Security Clearance at the Reliability level.
