Become part of the engineering team and be responsible for the design of custom PCB solutions from conceptualization to final hardware deployment.
MarineLabs is a fast-moving coastal intelligence data company that owns and operates a growing fleet of super rugged and rapidly deployable ocean weather instruments, producing reliable high-resolution data products in real-time to benefit marine safety and climate resilience.
MarineLabs is looking for an Electronics Test Engineer. You will join the engineering team and be responsible for the design of custom PCB solutions from conceptualization to final hardware deployment. You will also integrate various peripherals and external equipment into MarineLabs’ existing sensor solution. A key part of the role is developing, building, and maintaining QA and QC test rigs and procedures for both R&D tasks and production applications.
Responsibility
- Work with the Hardware development team (specifically alongside the Electrical and Systems Engineer) to prototype, integrate, validate, and test new hardware.
- Manage the full PCB design lifecycle, bringing electronic designs from conceptualization to the final product.
- Create and maintain test rigs to perform QA/QC on modules, submodules, and assemblies, ensuring the final product meets the highest standard of reliability.
- Design and build automated testing procedures for both R&D and production.
- Build prototype firmware for new components, modules, and integrations and verifies their functionality.
- Develop & maintain test scripts to evaluate new sensors, perform automated QA/QC tests, and validate new hardware designs.
- Perform tests both on-site and in the field for new hardware and existing deployed systems.
- Assist with Bill of Materials (BOM) and supply chain management.
Must Have Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, or Computer Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience with all areas of the PCB design lifecycle: conceptualization, schematic capture, board layout, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), supply chain, First Article Inspection (FAI), board bring-up, validation, and production support.
- Hands-on experience creating and performing robust, automated testing procedures for PCBs, hardware modules, and completed product assemblies to verify and quantify their functionality.
- Experience writing technical documentation, including wiring diagrams, user manuals, test procedures, and test reports.
- Familiarity with standard communication protocols and their implementation: UART, I2C, SPI, RS-485, RS-232, and USB.
- Proficiency in using testing and measurement equipment, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers, to verify and troubleshoot system functionality.
- Proficient with hand soldering equipment.
- Proficient in BOM and supply chain management.
- Sufficient knowledge in Linux, C, C++, and Python to understand and troubleshoot existing firmware and test scripts.
Nice to Have Qualifications
- Experience in designing rugged and resilient systems; experience with marine/oceanographic sensor solutions is a significant asset.
- Familiarity with complex PCB designs: multilayer, HDI, BGA, mixed signal, and timing-critical designs.
- Familiarity with low-power and battery-powered/solar-powered embedded systems design and adequate voltage regulation topologies.
- Familiarity with IoT systems and existing RF technologies, such as cellular, satellite, GNSS, and WiFi.
- Experience with analog and digital sensors.
- Experience in designing and building PLC systems.
- Experience designing and implementing test firmware and scripts.
- Hands-on experience with PCBA rework
- A passion for highly dynamic work environments with multiple projects; knowledge and/or experience in the marine environment and related technologies is an asset.
- Experience with Altium and Altium 365; familiarity with part library maintenance is an asset.
- Experience with 3D printing and rapid prototyping.
