Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Technical Services, the Engineering Technologist will play a crucial role in our projects. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with engineers, clients, and contractors to ensure seamless execution of marine infrastructure projects. These projects span various sectors, including aquaculture, maritime transportation, marine renewable energy, naval architecture, and oceanography. We work on everything from seaweed farms to ferry terminals, to wave and tidal energy projects.

Your expertise in civil, mechanical, or marine engineering, combined with proficiency in GIS, CAD, and drafting, will help DSA Ocean deliver projects to customers around the world. There will be opportunities to learn new skills and lead in the design and deployment of marine mooring systems, deploy marine equipment, and assist in engineering field reviews. A practical and hands-on mindset is required.


What Will You Do

Technical Support: Provide technical assistance to engineering teams during project planning, design, and execution.

GIS and CAD Expertise: Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to create accurate maps, schematics, and engineering drawings.

Drafting Best Practices: Apply industry-standard drafting practices to produce detailed plans, elevations, and cross-sections.

Field Assistance: Be willing to visit project sites, collaborating with engineers and ensuring designs are implemented correctly. Support in the deployment of oceanographic instruments such as current meters and CTDs.

Data Analysis: Support the analysis of geospatial data, hydrographic surveys, and marine environmental data.

Design:  Using experience gained through projects, develop mooring solutions for customers based on industry and company best practices.

Quality Assurance: Review engineering plans for accuracy and compliance with industry and company standards.

Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including oceanographers, naval architects, mechanical/civil engineers, ocean engineers, marine construction contractors, and project managers.

Continuous Learning: Stay updated on marine industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices.

About You

Education:

Graduation from a recognized institute of technology or college in a civil, marine, or mechanical discipline with a diploma of technology (technologist), or,

Certificate or diploma in a CAD/Drafting Technology program

Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in an engineering firm or technology company, with a focus on producing engineering construction plans using CAD and GIS tools.

Technical Skills:

Strong command of CAD tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc.) for drafting and 3D modeling.

Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) for spatial analysis and mapping.

Hands-on experience with ropes, shackles, rigging, chains and marine hardware is desirable.

Familiarity with hydrodynamic modeling and simulation software is a plus.

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent digital communication aptitude (e.g. Slack, email) is a must – as we heavily rely on these platforms for internal communication.

Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot technical challenges and propose effective solutions.

Team Player: Collaborative mindset and willingness to work in a dynamic environment.

Site Visits: Comfortable traveling to project sites as needed.
