First Light Technologies is a fast-growing, award-winning designer and manufacturer of solar powered, outdoor lighting products.
From our Victoria B.C. location, we work globally with a focus on building safer, more usable communities through solar outdoor lighting.
The Role
As a Mechanical Engineer reporting to the Engineering Manager (or designate), you are responsible for developing mechanical components and systems for both new and existing products. You lead mechanical design efforts from concept development through detailed design, prototyping, testing, and transfer to manufacturing. You collaborate closely with industrial designers, and electrical, firmware, and manufacturing engineers to ensure products meet performance, quality, and cost targets. In addition to new product development, you support ongoing improvements to existing products to enhance performance, reduce costs, and improve manufacturability.

Hours: Monday-Friday, 40 hours per week
Reports to: Engineering Manager
Salary: $85,000 - $100,000 CAD
Ideal start date: November 2025
What You’ll Do
- Develop the mechanical structure and detailed designs of new lighting products
- Create and revise designs of mechanical parts using SolidWorks
- Perform engineering calculations and simulations to optimize the structure of products
- Create and revise engineering drawings using SolidWorks
- Optimize and validate thermal designs for LED heat dissipation
- Develop and execute product test plans
- Conduct tests of mechanical, optical, and electrical components and assemblies
- Perform other duties as required.
What You Bring
- Proficient in creating detailed parts and drawings using SolidWorks
- Experienced with SolidWorks Simulation for structural analysis
- Skilled in designing components using sheet metal, castings, and machining techniques
- Strong background in developing and executing product testing
- Familiar with new product introduction processes and change management
- Solid foundation in physics, engineering principles, and material science
- Proficient with ASME Y14.5, First Article Inspections and Supplier Quality
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with a creative, problem-solving mindset
- Comfortable using basic shop tools for prototyping and testing
- Working knowledge of basic electronics
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Three to five years of product design experience

- Familiar with product lifecycle support
