UX Designer

This position is a 1-year term position providing maternity leave cover.

This is a 1-year term position, the salary range for this position is $89,000 - $100,000 commensurate with experience, along with a standard set of benefits.  This position can be in either Victoria or Vancouver.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Chief technology Officer, the UX Designer is responsible for designing the optimal user experience for the different groups of users interacting with EducationPlannerBC (EPBC).  These interactions encompass all user touch points, from user interfaces, emails, in person interactions, online chat, and more, they are not limited to just the user interface of the software that is used. This position participates in all software lifecycle phases: team project planning, requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment, and support. In all these areas, the UX Designer provides leadership and consulting to junior staff.  The position is part of the technical activities such as software development, software testing, systems design, system maintenance, general systems administration, and business analysis to support the software development process.

Key Accountabilities & Time Allocation

The following provides an approximate allocation of time for key accountabilities and a representative list of duties. From time to time, this position will be expected to undertake other duties and responsibilities as necessitated by its evolving position within the organization or the overall business objectives of the organization.

Designing Optimal User Experiences (40%)

  • Work with key stakeholders to design optimal user experiences, that considers both visual and non visual aspects
  • Engage in discussions with stakeholders regarding the optimal overall processes that may involve both digital and non-digital dimensions

Creating and Validating Designs (40%)

  • Design user flows and wireframes to guide overall development for optimal user experiences
  • Develop and create protypes of designs, to communicate ideas with the rest of the development team and organization
  • Conduct user testing, to validate the design and achieve the goals for user experience
  • Create visual designs to guide the development team on the desired visual outcomes for the development

Identifying User Challenges (20%)

  • Review user analytics to identify potential areas for improvement of user experience
  • Review support requests to determine if the requests could be addressed with a different user experience
  • Design and conducting A/B testing, to identify optimal designs for improved user experience and objective achievement

Competency Requirements

  • A sense of initiative, with the ability to set priorities, follow workflows, and meet deadline
  • A focus on providing exceptional client service to all EPBC staff and external stakeholders
  • Ability to apply problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, being mindful of your audience and their communication needs
  • Ability to work collaboratively by building and maintaining positive working relationships with team members across the organization and with external stakeholders, where applicable
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable, adjusting to occasional shifts in workload and task priorities
  • Ability to provide team members with guidance and constructive feedback

Education, Knowledge and Experience 

  • A Bachelor's degree in user or experience design, computer science, or a related field is required or an acceptable combination of education, training and 3-5 years of experience
  • Technical and experience with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS
  • Experience using design tools such as Figma to produce visual designs and interactive prototypes
  • Demonstrated experience defining information architecture, creating optimal user experiences, and approaches to visual communications
  • Knowledge and experience with conducting user research and testing, reviewing user analytics to gain an understanding of user behaviour
  • Experience using Agile development approach
  • Strong UI/UX design skills

Pay Range:     $89,000 - $100,000 annually, commensurate with experience

This is a full-time position and can be based in either Victoria or Vancouver. EducationPlannerBC offers a hybrid working arrangement, which involves working in the office a minimum of 2 days per week.
