Limbic Media's Justin Love is Interviewed by Made in CA

Limbic Media is a transdisciplinary team of artist-engineers passionate about technology and the arts. For the past 10 years, we have utilized a diverse set of technological and design skills to create innovative and memorable installations and experiences. Limbic Media designs public art that is truly interactive – living, dynamic systems that respond to public participation. Welcome to Art Against the Ordinary.

Tell us about yourself?

I am an entrepreneur and multimedia artist based in Victoria, BC, Canada. I am a co-founder and CEO of Limbic Media, a company specializing in real-time, interactive media control technologies. I have a combined Master’s degree in Computer Science and Visual Arts. During grad school, my research focused on Metacreation – a field that focuses on endowing machines with human creativity.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Things will get harder before they get easier. Work-life balance won’t work for you; focus on work-life integration. And most importantly, be kinder to yourself.

What problem does your business solve?

We turn ordinary spaces into extraordinary places and transform the mundane into the magical. We literally bring joy to the world.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

I am passionate about both technology and art, and I want to bring them together in interesting and meaningful ways. Early on, I found some other people who were interested in the same thing, and the rest is history.

What is your magic sauce?

We have a hybrid team of artist engineers who are passionate about the work we do. We have a work culture and environment that brings out the best in people. A favourite quote of mine is, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.” (Peter Drucker)

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

I’d like to continue to grow and expand the large-scale, interactive, story-driven multimedia experiences we’ve produced over the past couple of years, e.g., Agora: Path of LightEclipse: Walk with Light.

I also want to bring the technology we’ve developed for commercial markets to larger consumer markets. We are currently developing our first consumer product called, MaestroDMX. MaestroDMX is an autonomous lighting designer-in-a-box that listens to music and makes decisions like a professional lighting designer. The technology will make professional-quality lighting design accessible to anyone, e.g., musicians, DJs, streamers, and small music venues.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge was definitely figuring out a business model that was sustainable. For example, when we created Aurora, we didn’t realize that we would also need to develop and sell light products for the business to make sense. More recently, we started selling creative services as well.

We also realized that focusing on commercial markets would limit our growth potential. This insight helped us think about ways to apply the technology we’ve developed to consumer markets, and the idea for MaestroDMX was born.
